It’s easy to feel different for having red hair. You certainly stand out in a crowd, and primary schoolers let you know that. However, more than anything, my ginger curls have made me feel connected.

It’s the really the ‘ranga-bond’, if you will. When I see another redhead, I feel like I already know them, like we’re family. We’re lucky in that sense, having something like the rarity of our hair colour there to bind us as people.

Actually, my best friend and I first talked to each other because of our shared hair colour. Often, that draws the question from strangers “are you two sisters?” Technically, the answer is no. But we like to trick people. Sometimes we’re sisters, other times twins, and for the few months she was 18 and I wasn’t, we were the same person. Regardless, it was our hair that allowed us to become found-family. She’s my sister, and she always will be.
